The Selection

So I’m reading the new Little Red Book of Fly Fishing by Kirk Deeter and the late legendary Charlie Meyers. Its superb, every short lesson is made more meaningful by time spent on the water. In prepping my gear and selecting flies, I have taken their advice:

  • The Woolly Bugger
  • The Pheasant Tail Nymph
  • The Prince Nymph
  • The Parachute Adams
  • The Pale Morning Dun
  • The Cooper John (an attractor nymph)
  • The Elk Hair Caddis
  • Black Foam Beetle
  • The Barr Emerger
  • The Muddler Minnow

But I also have added some Eastern Water flies with the guidance of the Croton Trout Unlimited guys. their pamphlet, “Fly Fishing the Croton Watershed” has become my go-to source.

  • March Brown Americans (for when I make it back to the Beaverkill this summer)
  • Parachute Light Cahills
  • Parachute Sulphur Duns
  • Dave’s Hoppers
  • Parachute Blue-winged Olive

Yesterday, the Orvis 20 Fly Selection arrived…oh baby.

Last weekend I fished the catch and release section of the Cross River with good results on the Parachute Adams and an olive bugger.
